We took down all the doors and sanded them down. Then we (my hubby) masked off our garage and hung up all the cabinet doors by putting a little nail somewhere it wouldn't been seen when they were finished, and hung them to the rope with some nylon string.
Then we (ok, my hubby) sprayed them with primer, then sanded them again. After that my hubby sprayed them with two coats of black paint. Inside we did the same but with a foam roller. We distressed them a little and then painted on a satin clear coat. Then my sweet Dad helped us put some crown molding at the top. Well are ya ready.................here is the final result.
There are a few new things too. Our old dishwasher was broken, so darn we had to go get a new one, then I got the microwave for my birthday, and the fridge, well my brother n' law is a builder and he had some people who didn't want it so lucky me, I got it. I'd really like a new stove too, but maybe down the road.
Now here is a sad story, we were going to get new granite counter tops, but Saturday me and the family were on our way to visit grandparents and we hit some debris in the road. Well, it ripped a hole in our gas tank so can you guess how were paying to fix it? Yep, with the granite counter top money, I'm soooooooooooo sad. But maybe next year.
My favorite part of our new cabinets is the hardware, I think it makes them look so nice. Sorry my camera is a hunk of junk so it doesn't take the greatest pictures.
So there ya go, I think my hubby (and me a little) did a great job, and they will look even more super down the road with new granite counter tops.
It looks FANTASTIC.. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteYou've got me thinking of a posting idea...hmmmm.
Thanks so much for supporting all the SITS girls with the comments. Comment love is so good.
Ohhhhh ~ if I didn't have a brand new kitchen I'd be all over that look! We are in the process of purchasing all new curios etc and we love the de-stressed black stuff. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and I look forward to getting to know you SITS sister!
I'm completely blown away! Those look fantastic! You guys did a great job. What a huge difference it made.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they will look wonderful with new granite countertops but they look so good right now, I wouldn't fret about the delay.
Hi Nicole!! Those cabinets look fantastic. I really really mean that. Wow! What a transformation! Thanks for stopping by earlier today and leaving a comment. I'm guessing you got to my site through SITS. I need to come back and hang out here again...I like this place!
ReplyDeleteHey, the cabinets look incredible! We did the same thing last summer, only a cream with a chocolate glaze. It took an entire week of vacation for both of us to get it done! We also replaced the counters with granite - you will love it when you do... Pics on my blog are from October 30, 2007.
ReplyDeleteYes, you do need to come to Alabama! I love comments, too!!!
It looks INCREDIBLE! You guys did such a good job!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a fantastic transformation!! That really looks wonderful! We have oak cabinets with dated gold handles too--I would much rather have black or white cabinets. You two did a wonderful job and I like the addition of the crown molding, too.

ReplyDeleteOh by golly Im in love! Now I sound like a real dork but I do love those cabinets. Mine look kinda like yours did. Thay almost look sort of orangie . I have wanted to paint them black for a while now. It's kind of scary but yall look like pro's. Kudo's to you girlfriend... Susie H
ReplyDeleteYou worked like a dog and it sure did pay off! WOWWWEEE! I love it. It makes your counters look great! No need for granite :) Well done. Thanks for letting me know it was finished. And by the way, crazy that your cabs are the exact same layout as mine were...with the fridge in its own little hutch thing. Anyway...Congrats on a big payoff!
ReplyDeleteNicole your kitchen look amazing! I love how it adds so much depth and dimension to your kitchen! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThat is one amazing kitchen! The black looks sooooooo goood! Good job!
ReplyDeleteLove it, Nicole! Check out the last post on my site and visit a fabulous site for lady DIYers- www.bejane.com! Love your site!
ReplyDeleteI like the way your cabinets turned out! I painted my bathroom cabinets black a year or so ago and I love them. Black paint really makes things look more expensive.
ReplyDeleteThe two of you did a great job.
I love your cabinets! You guys did such a great job. I am now motivated to get to work on my own house!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your vote!!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen makeover is awesome! I love the dark cabinets.
i just scrolled through your blog and laughed outloud at the pictures of your baby asleep on your bed........that is how ours sleeps!! Except he's four! He ususally sneaks in around 4:30 or 5 and I always have to wedge myself out of the bed without waking him....
I'll be back to read more!
I love it! I spend so much of my day in the kitchen that it needs to be a nice room. I love the black, it gives it such a classy look.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. I am also waiting for my apron to arrive. I am also in Utah and LDS. Small world, isn't it?!
I'll be back again!

ReplyDeleteThanks!!
Wow! I am so impressed. I would love to do the same thing but have not been brave enough!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI would also like to replace my counter tops, they're just beige formica. I think I'm going to go with concrete with recycled glass mixed in.
Wow...they look great. It gives the kitchen such a great look.
ReplyDeleteNicole, you must have lots of friends to have so many posts. Don't forget about me. I am your friend, too. Even if I am terrible at leaving comments. I have to let everyone know that your kitchen looks so much more lovely, beautiful and welcoming in person. Hats off to the two men in you life that really can paint and do molding. Very Nice!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I just came over from Chatting at the Sky! Couldn't resist taking a look at new cabinets! LOOKS AWESOME! Way to go! Love it! Hope you don't mind me stoppin' by :) My comments are left under "Brian and Staci" but it's just me, Staci :)
ReplyDeleteWow! What a change! Not only is it pretty, but it looks custom made. I bet it will increase the value of your home.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, your cabinets looks soo good! I think your blog is so cute! Thanks for sharing and thanks for chatting tonight, I was glad you were there.
ReplyDeleteThis is weird, I left you a comment the other day, but I just happened to notice that it's not here!
ReplyDeleteAnyway . . . I LOVE the new kitchen, Nicole! It just looks amazing! (And like a lot of work!) But so worth it. You have the best taste - I wish you could come decorate my house. Hope I can see it in person soon! GREAT JOB!!!
It's so cute Nicole! I loved it when I saw it in real life. That black looks so good and the rolling pins are really cute on top of the new crown moulding. Your hubby rocks! I have a feeling you worked pretty hard on it too.
ReplyDeleteGranite counter tops will be pretty when they come, but until then, I think that it looks great with what you have!
Nicole,
ReplyDeleteYou guys did a great job with your kitchen. I am so glad you posted it. We are looking at buying house and Travis wants to paint the cabinets. I was wondering what black would look like. I love yours. Our neighbors painted theirs white and their walls green with black appliance. It looked nice too. I must admit, I am not very exicted about doing the work, but first we have to get the house:).
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Your cabinets look amazing!!!! Way to go. Sorry about the counters.
ReplyDeletebeautiful! Mike has been wanting to paint ours black, but I just don't have the guts. Your kitchen is stunning.
ReplyDeleteJust catching up on my favorite blogs after flying for 3 days! Your kitchen looks just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog through one of my mostes favorite blogs, the Nesting place...and I love it! I think we are twins seperated from birth....really...are you adopted with a twin seperated at birth?
ReplyDeletehmmmm. I will be back and come visit me too! I love your kitchen remodel! I am playing around with doing some builtins in my bedroom in the distressed black and this gives me more desire to do it!
God bless you
I found you from SITS and I LOVE your blog! I'm saving you in my favorites.
ReplyDeleteLove the kitchen. We are in the process of redoing ours too! My husband added molding to the top of cabinets like you did- I think we had the same boring builders cabinets!
Came from SITS.
ReplyDeleteThat is GORGEOUS!!!! Seriously. Beautiful.
Great job in the kitchen! That was quite a project. Too bad about the granite counter money but a new gas tank is important, unfortuneately.
ReplyDeleteNice post! I'm impressed with what a great job you guys did!
Hey there, SITS sister!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your kitchen re-do! We're apartment bound for now but I'll remember this when we buy a home (hopefully in November)!!
Stopped by via SITS and I LOVE your cabinet re-do! I have those same color cabinets and everyday I plot how to get rid of them...sad for my husband that now you've got me seriously considering this! It looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteBad news about the granite money...we seem to replace our windshields on a monthly basis here in Utah!
Looks great! What a change for probably very little "change". We revamped our kitchen this past year and it made a world of difference.
ReplyDeleteLooks GREAT!!!! Very modern but comfortable. I love it
ReplyDeletethey look fantastic!! great job
ReplyDeleteWow, this makes wish we still owned a house. I so want to revamp my kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous! And you know...I really like your current countertops...they give a great contrast to the black. We have black granite countertops with honey colored cabinets. But I didn't do it...it was like that when we got the house...but if this was my old house...I would be all over this project!
ReplyDeleteYou have an adorable blog. The blackcabinets are so fun. Did you do one as a chalkboard? That would have been fun too. I've got black doors in my house and love them!!
ReplyDeleteI love the black. The hardware is great!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the gas tank, but at least you had money saved up and didn't have to cut back in other areas! ;)
Hi, first time visitor to your blog from SITs here. I really like the black cabinets....it gives a whole new look. Very modern! You and your husband did a great job!
ReplyDeleteWOW that looks great...I'm actually getting ready to paint our old ugly bedroom set black...I feel better about doing it now seeing your kitchen...just curious...what kind of paint did you use??
ReplyDeleteVery impressive. It looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSITS sister here. LOVE the makeover! I never would have thought black cabinets would look so great, but WOW! Sorry about the granite. It will look fantastic when they're in, but definitely looks wonderful as is.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I love the song Apologize. I enjoyed hearing it while perusing your site!
Black is so classy! Your hanging them on a rope was genius! And the hardware not only looks great, but will help prolong the paint job too. But that's just the designer in me talking :).
ReplyDeleteHappy to be your SITS sister and your sister in the gospel too ;).
~Jennifer P.
Love your cabinets! We're getting ready to redo our bathroom, from ivory with pink tub/toilet/sink to navy blue with all white fixtures. hooray for color!
ReplyDeleteFound your site through SITS. I'll be stopping by again!
Should I say wow for the kitchen or wow for getting your hubby to do all that painting??? What a wonderful change that made! We just recently painted our kitchen...still waiting for the finishing touches, but it is almost done. Glad to find your blog!
ReplyDeleteFellow SITS blogger here . . . LOVE the cabinets! I can copy looks, but have no idea how to do it myself, so I admire you!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading other posts . . . . keep up the great work!
Very chic! I never would have thought to paint cabinets black. I was only brave enough to paint mine white. :)
ReplyDeleteI like it!
I. LOVE. THAT. BLACK!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing, and I never would have thought of black kitchen cabinets!
Until now. Now I may be obsessed with those cabinets...
Great job!!!
That is GREAT. Such a dramatic difference.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you for talking your husband into that! Mine would never go for anything that bold... I'm jealous!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job. I painted the cabinets black in my last house and hubby was pretty apprehensive too. But the results were great.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just have to go with it. The worst that can happen is you have to paint them again.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of work, but totally worth it. Your kitchen looks great!
ReplyDeleteHi! Followed you from SITS.
ReplyDeleteYowzah!
Your kitchen looks fantastic!
I didn't think I'd like it, but the after is so much better than the before. Nice work!! Isn't a makeover refreshing? We re-floored our entire house last year, and we're still loving the change. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLove the kitchen make over. Your cabinets look great!
ReplyDeletePlease contact Southern Living and let them know your fabulous kitchen needs to be featured within their pages. For real.
ReplyDeleteThat is so gorgeous! What a fabulous idea. Honestly, if I ever get a house, I want to do that.
ReplyDeleteLooks WONDERFUL! We (P) just painted out kitchen cabinets and it makes a world of difference. Our only problem was we didn't spray them.
ReplyDeleteI NEVER would've thought black cabinets would look good, but they look fantastic!
ReplyDeletefound you through SITS. I love this look!
ReplyDeleteLOOKS totally and utterly fantastic. Too bad about your counter tops, though!
ReplyDeleteLove the cabinets, you are brave and must have an awesome husband because I could never trust mine to do that. And the whole no counter tops for now becasue I gotta fix my car would so be my luck.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is an amazing make-over!
ReplyDeleteNice job! and your walls are painted the same color as mine.
ReplyDeleteI love that you found a way to recycle your current cabinets.
Also, I agree... your hardware is fabulous!
This turned out great! And I agree the hardware is gorgeous
ReplyDeleteThey look awesome!!! I would be terrified to do it!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks awesome! I love the black cabinets... if only I could get my husband on board with painted cabinets!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog; it's been rather neglected lately. Summertime, you know!
First, your pictures are awesome for having a junk piece of camera. Second, I really love how your kitchen turned out. I totally have your cabinets (prepaint)and I just may have to try that.

ReplyDeleteWowee! That looks great! I want a new kitchen!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! It's amazing what a coat of paint and new hardware can do.
ReplyDeleteLove the kitchen! People always say never to paint over wood but we did the same thing with my moms house and it is beautiful as well! I love how the new drawer pulls look old fashioned at the same time, like the ones in my grandmothers kitchen! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! I have a newer kitchen already, but you have confirmed my idea of painting our dated bathroom vanities dark chocolate brown or black. Looks awesome! Don't worry about the granite, it looks soooooo good now and when you get to do the counters then you can celebrate all over again.
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing!!!! I am gonig to show MY husband so we can do it, too.
ReplyDelete8-}
Thanks for the inspiration.
this is gorgeous! such a huge impact! i love it!
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous!
You need to send those before/afters to a magazine
I was worried when you said black that it would make the kitchen look smaller but I don't think it does at all! Good job!

ReplyDeletewandered over from SITS and I too enjoy the black. is there lots of natural light in the room to keep in from feeling dark? love it!
I had to scroll down for like an hour to post my comment. That's what I get for being late to the party...
ReplyDeleteThe cabinets look fabulous though! Good choice.
WOW! They look AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteWow! These look great. When you said black paint, I was a bit skeptical, but they look fantastic, and I love the new fixtures, too! I can't believe you did this all by yourselves!
ReplyDeleteVery classy looking!!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing!
ReplyDeleteSITS sister here - there are so many things to love about this project! The fact that you did it all yourself, the fact that you took what you already had and gave it a face-lift (so eco-savvy of you!), the fact that it looks absolutely FABULOUS! Thanks for sharing - you have inspired me (as well as many many others, from what I can see on all these awesome comments!)
ReplyDeleteJust dropping by to say I LOVE your cabinets! Saw you on SITS.
ReplyDeleteLove the cabinets. Great job! I think everything looks more elegant painted black. Enjoy!
ReplyDeletethat really looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI just redid my kitchen last September (you can see it in my archives). We STILL haven't painted the cabinents...but we are going to go for white distressed, if we ever get around to it. I LOOOOVE the black though, it looks great!
ReplyDeleteWOW, you did a great job, that is NOT what mine would look like if I did them!! lol You wouldn't want to see the mess I would make.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the difference the black makes! Very nice! We've been saving up for granite countertops for years, too, and the money always ends up going somewhere else. *sigh*
