Family Home Evening!

I hope no one will mind me sharing a little something that our family really enjoys. Every Monday night we have something we call Family Home Evening.

My kids love it, sometimes I'm lazy and don't really want to do it, but my kids are persistent and make sure that we do. We usually start out with a song, then a prayer, a lesson, (usually a scripture story, or lesson on reverence, or kindness or something like that, you get the idea) then an activity, and if I've gotten my act together a treat. My daughter loves to teach the lesson, it doesn't always make sense, sometimes she just makes up stories with our dinosaur flannel board set, but she loves it.

Sometimes we don't do any of that, we just go swimming or work in the yard together.

So, I hope no one thinks I'm trying to push our religion on them, it's just something my family really enjoys and it brings us closer as a family. As crazy as life can get sometimes it's nice to have one night a week set aside to spend time as a family. Do any of you do something similar? I would love some ides! I know you guys are out there, I really would love to hear from you.

  1. You know I don't think that. I think reserving an evening for family is a great idea. For all families.

As you know I am a born again Christian...and family is very important to me. I grew up a Catholic and every Thursday evening we prayed the rosery. That was until my older siblings had school events or went to college. But I remember that and it is a dear memory for me.

You are making wonderful memories for your family. That's what a Mom does! Woohoo for you!

  2. I love that idea...and you are not pushing anything. We are NOT relious but I can easily make that wonderful project work for us...I have been thinking about incorporating an activity that requires acknowledging the positive about each other ...thanks for the idea.

  3. I'm not sure how similiar this is to what you do with your family...but every night at dinner (and it's a rare night we don't sit down to eat together) we each take turns telling what was good about our day and what was bad. Then we all do the daily quiz from the newspaper to test our brain power. lol

  4. I think it's a beautiful idea. We have some things that we do as a family like that but they're usually centered around holidays...Resurrection Eggs at Easter...A particular set of ornaments that detail different names for Jesus at Christmas.

I've been thinking lately that I'd like to have a regular family time during the week. I really like the idea of scheduling it for a particular night. Once you do it a few times, the kids will hold you accountable for doing it.

    Thanks for sharing.

  12. This is seriously so awesome! I would love to do this as my little guy grows up (and what a pretty board to go with it!). My family wasn't religious at all growing up, but I am also a saved Christian so this would be wonderful for my husband & I.
